NKE Instrumentation: Multiparameter Probes for Fresh and Seawater
NKE Instrumentation specializes in developing and manufacturing autonomous monitoring stations for water quality control. Their multiparameter probes, designed for both fresh and seawater, measure key physicochemical parameters and are equipped with a wiper to prevent biofouling. These probes can be adapted to various supports like buoys, ladders, or pontoons, and offer easy wireless configuration via a PC’s USB port.
Autonomous Data Loggers – WiSens Family
The company also offers autonomous data loggers, part of the WiSens Family, which monitor chemical and physical parameters in oceans, freshwater, and underwater systems. These loggers are known for their ease of use, featuring integrated WiFi and a simple on-off switch. The WiSens range is capable of measuring parameters such as temperature, pressure, conductivity, salinity, turbidity, acceleration, and tides.
MoSens – Compact Modbus-Based Monitoring
In addition, NKE has developed MoSens, which complements their existing WiMo range of multiparameter probes. MoSens is a more compact system using Modbus communication. WiMo smart sensors can be easily connected and disconnected without tools, retaining their calibration values and requiring no hardware or software manipulation.

Sequoia: Particle Analysis Technology
Sequoia Scientific, Inc., founded in 1995, introduced the world’s first submersible commercial instruments for particle analysis, known as LISST (Laser In-situ Scattering and Transmissometry). These systems are compact, programmable, battery-powered, and self-contained, with lifetime calibration. Over the years, Sequoia has developed more than 40 different sensors, many of which use laser technology, holography, and acoustic backscatter for measuring suspended particles and optical properties of water.
Measurement of Suspended Particles
Sequoia's instruments measure the size, concentration, and characteristics of suspended particles such as sediment grains, algae, oil droplets, and air bubbles. Their products are primarily used in ocean science, freshwater research, and environmental monitoring but also find applications in industries like drilling and hydropower. Some instruments, like the LISST-Holo, even create images of particles, while others measure water optical properties such as beam attenuation and Volume Scattering Function (VSF).
Industry-Leading Instruments and Software
Sequoia's flagship products, including the LISST-200X, LISST-VSF, and the new FlowControl, are commonly used in the ocean optics community and in industrial applications that require precise particle size and concentration measurements. Their software tools like HydroLight and EcoLight-S further support oceanography and remote sensing tasks. With their long history, Sequoia continues to be a leader in particle measurement technology.
